Using AI Photos on Dating Apps — What You Should Know

The biggest risk: getting reported by other users
The first and most important thing to focus on is that your photos look real to a human (ask a friend or in our community if you want a second opinion).
Dating apps take reports quite seriously (for any profile, no matter the reason), especially since there are way more men than women on the dating apps, so they try to keep the women happy.
Are AI photos against the rules?
None of the major dating apps explicitly ban AI-generated photos. Their policies focus on authenticity and misrepresentation, not on the tool used to create the image:
- Hinge: "AI images should not be used to misrepresent yourself." (source)
- Tinder: "Just be you." (source)
- Bumble: "We expect all our members to represent themselves accurately." (source)
Why don't the apps just ban AI photos outright?
A few reasons:
- Enforcement is hard. If a policy can't be reliably enforced, putting it in writing creates more problems than it solves (user reports the apps can't act on, inconsistent moderation, etc.).
- AI detection is not exact. Even the best public tools we test against disagree with each other on the same photo, and they all produce false positives on real photos.
- Banning by mistake is bad for business. If a dating app starts banning users on uncertain detection results, some of those bans will hit real users with real photos — and those users tend to be loud about it (bad reviews, social media, press).
- The economics limit what detection they can run. Tinder and Hinge only make a few bucks per user (Match Group reports roughly $20–30 per month per paying user, but only a small fraction of users pay, source). At those margins, they can't afford to throw expensive, high-accuracy AI models at every uploaded photo. They're limited to fast, cheap algorithms.
The practical consequence: the apps can only act with confidence on photos that are clearly AI. But "clear to a human" and "clear to an algorithm" are not the same thing. There are essentially four markers that flag a photo as AI-generated:
- It just looks fake. The one humans can spot (plastic skin, bad hands, weird lighting, off proportions, etc.).
- Invisible watermarks in the pixels. Almost all AI-generated photos have human-invisible watermarking baked right into the pixels. One example is a technology called SynthID, used by Nvidia, OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini) and many others of the largest AI companies.
- Metadata. Almost all AI photo generators attach metadata to the generated photos (either intentionally or accidentally) that clearly marks them as AI-generated. This can be via C2PA Content Credentials, prompts being stored in the metadata, and much more.
- Invisible patterns. On top of all the above, AI-generated images carry different patterns and traces that come from being generated by a computer rather than captured by a camera. These are invisible to humans but can be obvious to AI detection algorithms.

- The photos generally look more real. Our goal is for photos to look like normal candid iPhone photos that don't raise any suspicion for humans.
- We remove the invisible watermarks. The hidden pixel-level watermarks embedded by AI providers (SynthID and similar) are stripped out on download.
- We rebuild the metadata. Every trace of AI-related metadata (C2PA Content Credentials, embedded prompts, generator tags, and the rest) is fully stripped, and a complete, randomized smartphone metadata block — 200+ fields exactly imitating the metadata set by a real smartphone — is injected in its place.
- We disrupt the pixel-level fingerprints. The image is processed to break the subtle statistical patterns detection algorithms look for, while trying to avoid degrading the quality too much.
That said, photos from UnrealPhotos can still occasionally get flagged as AI-generated, especially if inspected by a very powerful and expensive AI model. From our testing against SightEngine, this happens about 2% of the time. This is unavoidable. But since the apps can't afford to run state-of-the-art AI models against every photo, and don't want to risk banning people by mistake when they aren't certain, UnrealPhotos is a lot safer to use.
What about face verification?
Tinder, Hinge, and others are focusing on face verification (a quick "video selfie" that gets compared against your profile photos). This is generally not a problem with AI photos from UnrealPhotos:
- The AI photos look like you, so the verification compares your real face to a face that resembles you. It generally passes.
- If a verification fails, the apps don't interpret that as "your photo is AI-generated." Real users fail face verification all the time — bad lighting, scarves, angles, distance. The app just asks you to try again.
- If one photo doesn't verify, you can generate another and try again. There's no penalty for retrying.
Can I test my photos?
Yes, if you want extra peace of mind, we suggest using SightEngine. It's free to use (with limits) and we found it quite reliable compared to many alternatives.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Different tools will disagree, they often use different algorithms and there's no gold standard.
- A flag on a detection tool is not the same as a ban on a dating app. The dating apps run their own systems and have strong reasons not to act on uncertain results as described above. Some even use photos were flagged as 99% AI-generated without problem, even though it may be more risky.
- The results are not deterministic. SightEngine and similar tools can give a different score on the same photo on a different day. (If you upload the same image twice in a row you'll see the same score, but only because the result is cached for a while).
Summary
We can't guarantee that no one will ever get banned, no one can. But the realistic picture is:
- The apps don't explicitly ban AI photos.
- Currently, the biggest risk seems to be being reported by other users.
- AI detection at scale is unreliable and expensive. The dating apps have strong reasons not to ban on uncertain results.
